  • Conifer, evergreen tree to 30-50 ft (10-15 m) high, usually conical, older trees have a flat crown.  Bark red and thin, exfoliating, basal trunk bark furrowed and divided into thick plates.  Leaves (needles) bright green, thin and pendulous, 3 per bundle occasionally 2, 20-30 cm long.  Cones about 3-7(10) cm long, red-brown, usually in groups of 3, persisting for some time.

  • Hardy to USDA Zone 6     Native to southwest China, predominantly at 600-3000 m elevation on the high plateaus of Yunnan Province, but extending north into Sichuan (Szechwan) Province.
