- Broadleaf deciduous shrub, to about 3(6) ft (~1-2 m) high, dense crown, short branched, twigs thin, outstretched, glabrous when mature; spreads by sucker. Leaves alternate, simple, small, 3-5 cm long, elliptic to obovate, base wedge-shaped, apex acute or obtuse, glabrous, shiny dark green, tough. Flowers white, small, about 1.5 cm wide, 2-4 per short clusters (umbles). Fruit globose, 1 cm wide, dark red, sour, stone acute on both ends; used in making jams, jellies and pies.
