- Conifer, evergreen, to 20 ft (6 m), broadly pyramidal, semi-weeping, with pendulous branch tips. Leaves needle-like, in whorls of 3, 3-5 mm long and ~1 mm wide. Pollen cones axillary, ovoid or globose, 3-4 mm. Seed cones axillary, black when ripe, lustrous, ovoid or subglobose, 7-9 mm, 1-seeded.
- Hardy to USDA Zone 7 Native to China. According to Jacobson (1996) a "species named in 1940; of controversial affinity and status". Apparently closely related to J. squamata var. fargesii.
