  • Evergreen shrub or tree, to 20 ft (6 m) tall, somewhat less in wide, dense.  Leaves opposite, simple, leathery, 8-16 cm long and 4-5.5 cm wide, glossy, dark green, olive green below.  Flowers small, white, fragrant, in round clusters (cymose).  Fruit small, red berries in large pendulous clusters, they turn black when ripe.
  • Sun to partial shade.  Not fussy about soil, but avoid wet soils.  Makes a good hedge.
  • Hardy to USDA Zone 8-9     Native to Japan.
  • Possibly more properly classified as Viburnum odoratissimum var. awabuki.
