Over 150 species of deciduous or evergreen shrubs or small trees.  Now in the family Adoxaceae, previously in Caprifoliaceae.   Leaves are simple, opposite, occasionally in whorls of 3, entire, serrate, dentate or lobed.  Flowers are usually white or cream, but sometimes pinkish, in clusters (corymbs, umbels, panicles), sometimes with showy ray flowers, 5-lobed, and 5 stamens.  Fruit is 1-seeded, juicy or dry (drupe), and red, blue, or black.  Widely distributed in the temperate northern hemisphere (some 15 species are native to North America) and extending into South America and Malaysia.
