  • Deciduous tree, to 40 ft (12 m) high and a spread of 25 ft (8 m), oval with upright branches, young shoots have wine-red prickles (thorns).  Leaves similar to the species type but bright yellow in spring then greenish-yellow in summer.

  • Hardy to USDA Zone 4      Found in the Willem Jansen nursery in Holland in 1935, and named after the province of Friesland.
