About 20 species of deciduous shrubs and trees, branches often somewhat angular.  Leaves alternate, compound (odd-pinnate), leaflets opposite, entire; stipules often present in the form of stout thorns.  Flowers white to purple-pink, in dense pendulous clusters (racemes).  Fruit a pod, linear, flat.  Native to North America and Mexico.
