- Evergreen shrub or small tree, forms thickets, shrubs 6-16 ft (2-5 m) tall, less commonly a tree which may reach 25 ft (7.5 m) tall. Leaves alternate, simple, leathery, oblong to elliptical, 1.5-3 cm long, margins are spiny and coarsely toothed (holly-liked), tip sharp pointed, gray green or yellow green above, yellow green below with yellowish to reddish hairs. Fruit (acorn) 12-25 mm long, slender, cylindrical to egg-shaped, turbinate cup enclosed about 1/4th of the nut and is 10 mm in diameter.
- Sun. Tolerates a wide range of soil types, but growth is best on sandy to clay loams.
- Hardy to USDA Zone Native to the pinon-juniper belt in desert mountains from southern California, Baja California, east to Colorado, western Texas and adjacent Mexico.
- turbinella: shaped like a top, presumably a reference to the acorn.
