- Deciduous tree, to about 85 ft (25 m) high, rounded crown. Leaves alternate, simple, elliptic-oblong to lanceolate, 7-16 cm long, base wedge-shaped to rounded, margin coarsely serrate, 6-14 vein pairs terminating in teeth, glossy dark green above, gray tomentose to glabrous below. Acorns are ovoid, 2-3 cm long, have a very short stalk (nearly sessile), and the cup encloses a third to a half.
