  • Deciduous tree or large shrub, may grow to 20-30 ft (6-9 m) tall, bark gray-brown, furrowed and ridged, does not exfoliate.  Leaves alternate, simple, about 15 cm long and 6 cm wide, margin toothed, rubbery-feeling, glossy, dark green, short petiole; reddish fall color.  Flowers white, about 6 cm wide, large yellow center; blooms in late-spring/early summer.  Fruit red than brown, seed capsule beaked, persists.
  • Partial sun to shade.  Best in moist soil.
  • Hardy to USDA Zone 6.   Native to eastern China.  Introduced to the US in 1936, as S. sinensis with which it is often confused, from the Lushan Botanic Garden of China (Jacobson, 1996).
