  • Broadleaf deciduous tree, 20-25 ft (6-7.6 m), pyramidal, shrubby; the bark, on young trees scaly, exfoliates, and smooth underneath, reddish-tan.  Leaves alternate, simple, elliptic to oblong-elliptic, 4-7.5 cm long, finely serrate, dark green, may become reddish in fall.  Flowers about 2.5 cm wide, white with orange stamens, fruit is 5-valved, pointed.
  • Best in partial shade, will take full sun.  Seems to have excellent heat tolerance.
  • Hardy to USDA Zone 6      Native to Japan.  Sometimes used in bonsai.
  • Oregon State Univ. campus: southeast of West Hall, just north of the S. pseudocamellia.
