- Broadleaf deciduous tree, 40-60 ft (12-20 m) tall. Bark smooth, gray. Leaves simple, alternate, variable, ovate to ovate-elliptic, 4-11 × 3.5-6 cm, leathery, base rounded, obtuse, or truncate, margin serrate except toward the base, tip pointed, dark above, duller below, veins reticulate, petiole about 1 cm; yellow leaf fall color. Fruit dark orange when ripe, nearly spherical, 5-7 mm in diam., contains a single white seed.
- Sun to partial shade. Soil adaptable.
- Hardy to USDA Zone 5 Native to China, Taiwan, Korea, and Japan.
- Caution: can become an invasive weed in some environments. It is naturalized throughout most of southeast Queensland, Australia.
