About 100 species of evergreen or deciduous shrubs and small trees, branches initially have stellate (hairs in star-like tufts) pubescence.  Leaves alternate, more or less pubescent, short petioles.  Flowers white, solitary or in clusters, corolla deeply 5-lobed, 10 stamens, rarely to 16.  Fruit a dry or fleshy drupe, 1-2 seeded.  Native to North and South America, Asia, and Europe.
