About 30 species of deciduous trees and shrubs, occasionally terminating in a thorn.  Leaves alternate, simple, usually serrate, sometimes lobed.  Flowers white, yellowish, green, or rose, in clusters on lateral shoots, 5 each calyx and petals, usually 20 stamens (to 25-30).  Fruit often has persistent calyx, flesh embedded with grit (stone) cells.  Native from Europe to North Africa and Asia.
