From 5 to 8 species, evergreen coniferous trees.  Leaves spirally arranged but more or less 2-ranked (especially in shade), linear, flattened, tapered at petiole-like base, green and furrowed above, 2 stomatal bands below.  Native to North America and eastern Asia.  Seed cones pendulous, short stalked, ripening in the first year, not disintegrating.
