Two species of dwarf evergreen shrubs, twigs 4-angled, corky, and finely warted.  Leaves opposite, densely arranged, small, entire or finely serrate.  Flowers inconspicuous, green or reddish.  Fruit is a leathery capsule.  Native to North America.  The genus is sometimes given as Pachistima

Paxistima: from the Greek pachy, thick, and stimga.
