Some 5 or more species of deciduous trees and occasionally shrubs, bark smooth and scaly, and branches somewhat erect.  Leaves alternate, simple, parallel veined, coarsely serrate, short petiole.  Flowers axillary, inconspicuous, green, males in clusters, female solitary or few, on current season’s shoots.  Fruit a dry nut-like drupe.  Native to the Caucasus, east Asia, Taiwan, and Japan.
