About 45 species of deciduous, rarely semi-evergreen, trees, occasionally shrubs. Bark often deeply furrowed. Leaves alternate, simple, short petioled, veins pinnate, never 3-veined, serrate or biserrate, usually somewhat pubescent below. Flowers bisexual, inconspicuous. Fruit a samara, ovoid to oblong, with an encircling winged margin. Native to northern temperate regions to northern Mexico and central Asia.
