Evergreen small trees or shrubs with spreading or ascending branches. Shade tolerant. Foliage is usually dark green and dense. Leaves are needle-like, flat, and lighter green on the underside. The fruit (aril) consists of a single seed (poisonous!) surrounded by a red, fleshy-cup.
