About 100 species of deciduous trees or shrubs, buds rather large and with overlapping scales.  Leaves alternate, simple or pinnately (odd) compound, with stipules.  Flowers usually bisexual and white, in compound clusters (corymb), 5 sepals, 5 petals, and 15-20 stamens.  Fruit a small pome (apple-like).  Native to the Northern Hemisphere.
Sorbus: from the Latin sorbum, the name Pliny used for the fruit of Sorbus domestica.
