Some 150 species of small to medium sized shrubs, deciduous, occasionally evergreen, often with prickly stems. Leaves alternate, simple, frequently lobed, short petiole, folded in the bud stage. Flowers usually bisexual, often 5-parted, sometimes 4, petals green or green-white. Fruit a juicy, few to many seeded berry.
Ribes: apparently derived from the Arabic or Persian name ribas, acid-tasting (Stearn, 1996)
