Ten species of large deciduous trees.  Leaves alternate, compound (pinnate), leaflets serrate.   Both male and female in pendulous catkins.  Fruit a small winged nutlet, 1-seeded.   Native range from the Caucasus to eastern and southeastern Asia.

Pterocarya: from the Greek pteron, wing, and karyon, nut; a reference to the winged fruit.
