- Evergreen shrub, 1-3 ft (03-0.9 m) high, dense, rounded, shoots furrowed, pubescent when young. Leaves simple, 6-12 mm long, alternate, crowded, leathery, elliptic-oblong, tapered, glabrous reddish color in winter, margins entire somewhat involuted. Flowers red-brown, in axillary racemes 2-2.5 cm long, calyx dark red. Fruit globose, black-red, 6 mm wide.
