- Broadleaf deciduous tree. Bark pale grey to grey, samara densely pubescent on seed, flowers and fruit produced, March - May (Flora of China). The tree has pubescence over the seed, which distinguishes var. davidiana from var. japonica.
- Native range restricted to China, found in the provinces of Hebei, Henan, Shaanxi, and Shanxi, which are south to southwest of Beijing.
- The tree is very rare in cultivation beyond China
