- Deciduous, broadleaf tree, narrow, upright habit, to 20-30 ft high and 8-10 ft wide (6-9m X 2.4-3m). Flowers, large,18 cm long, chalice-shaped, yellow to gold shades with a pink blush or lines. Blooms appear in mid- to late-spring, before the elliptic to ovate leaves emerge and less danger from spring frosts.
- Sun to light shade.
- Hardy to USDA Zone 5 'Sunsation' is a hybrid derived from a cross of 'Elizabeth' (yellow blooms) and 'Woodman' (blooms of dark purple, yellowgreen, and light pink). It was selected by Dr. August “Augie” Kerr, a productive plant breeder who retired to North Carolina and there pursued one of his major interests, magnolias. ‘Sunsation’ was introduced in 2000.
