  • Broadleaf evergreen shrub (usually) or small tree, 6-8(20) ft [1.8-2.4(7 m)] tall, pyramidal habit.  Leaves simple, leathery, lanceolate to obovate, 6-15 cm long, 1-5 cm wide, highly aromatic when bruised, tip pointed, base tapering to a fine wedge, margin entire, glabrous and glossy dark green above and paler below, petiole green, 1-2 cm long.   Flowers cupped, to 2 cm diam., waxy, copper to dark red, 10-14 petals (tepals), elliptic to obovate, 11-28 stamen. 
  • Part sun to shade.  Best in moist, high organic soil.
  • Hardy to USDA Zone 7     Native to China
