- Deciduous shrub, multi-stemmed, arching branches. Leaves alternate, pinnately compound, leaflets very narrow, almost grass-like. Flowers pea-like, small, light yellow.
- Sun or light shade. Adaptable, very cold hardy, tolerant of poor soil, drought, alkalinity, salt, and strong winds. By training to a single leader it can develop into a small tree.
- Hardy to USDA Zone 2 Originated in about 1884 in Germany and introduced by Herr Lorberg’s nursery of Berlin and officially named in 1906 (Jacobson, 1996). It was growing in the US in 1912 and grown in the Midwest and prairie regions since the early 1930s.
