  • Broadleaf deciduous tree, slow-medium growth rate, possibly 12 × 7 ft (3.6 × 2.1 m) in 10 years.  Leaves simple, opposite; emerge red-brown, variegated, blotched and streaked with pink, red and orange above, yellow-green later; underside purplish.  
  • Sun to part shade.
  • Hardy to USDA Zone 4.     Introduced about 1887 by the Makoy nursery in Belgium (Jacobson, 1996).
