Two species of deciduous trees.  Leaves alternate, simple, broadly oblong, truncate at apex.  Flowers terminal, solitary, "tulip-shaped", 3 outspread sepals and 6 upright petals (Some authorities do not distinguish between the sepals and petals and the parts are listed as 9 tepals.), numerous stamens.  Fruit is cone-like, composed of numerous single-seeded, winged achenes.  Native to eastern North America (L. tulipifera) and China, Indochina (L. chinense).
