Around 800 species of deciduous or evergreen latex bearing trees, shrubs, and woody vines.  Leaves are usually simple and alternately arranged, large variation in size.  Flowers unisexual, small, enclosed within a fleshy receptacle (the fig).  The mature receptacles are of varying size and color.   Native to tropical and subtropical regions in both hemispheres.
Ficus: the ancient Latin name for the edible fig.
