About 150 species of annual and perennial herbs and small shrubs. Many of the species are used as food plants by the larvae of butterflies and moths. Mostly found in the western US.
eriogonum: Greek, ĕriŏn, wool; gŏny, a knee. Stems of these plants are downy at the nodes.
