A genus of about 100 species of deciduous trees and shrubs, most are found in the tropics, but two hardy species are found in gardens, one is native to China (C. retusus) and the other eastern North America (C. virginicus).
Chionanthus: from the Greek chion, snow, and anthos, flower, a reference to the profusion of white flowers produced by the plants.
