Ten species of evergreen shrubs or small trees with small, petalless, fragrant flowers. Leaves simple, alternate but appear as 2-ranked, the seemingly opposite "leaf" pairs are made up of larger true leaves and smaller, leaf-like stipules (botanical oddity). Native to South America, especially Argentina and Chile.
Azara: after J.N. Azara (1734-1804), a Spanish patron of science.
