Common Name:
Oregon Myrtle

A single species, some say two, of aromatic evergreen trees.  Leaves alternate, leathery, entire.  Flowers bisexual, in stalked clusters (umbels) toward the branch tips, calyx tubular with 6 equal lobes, petals absent, 9 stamens in 3 whorls.  Fruit a berry, green and ripening purple.  Native to southern Oregon and California.
Umbellularia: the Latin umbella, navel, apparently a reference to the inflorescence form.
