Some 250 erect, trailing or prostrate shrubs, shoots dying down in winter  Leaves alternate, simple or compound, stipules present.  Flowers white or pink, calyx and corolla 5-parted, numerous stamens.  Fruit is a single-seeded dupe, usually grouped in an aggregate fruit form.  Native mostly to the Northern Hemisphere, but also found in Africa, Australia, New Zealand and Pacific Islands.
