  • Broadleaf evergreen shrub, 3 ft (0.9 m) in 10 years, to 1.8 m tall, young shoots densely tomentose or bristly.  Leaves 4.5-10 cm long, ovate to oblong, smooth, dark green and few scattered hairs above, lower side with a 2-layered densely matted indumentum, appears brown to dark brown.  Flowers tubular bell-shaped, 5 cm long, calyx usually red, petals glistening scarlet or deep crimson, in clusters of up to 10.
  • -5°F, early-mid, 3-4/4-5/4 [flower / plant & foliage / performance; scale 1 (poor) - 5 (best)].  Sun to part shade.   Native to western China (Yunnan and Xizang) and northeast Burma.
