  • Deciduous shrub or small tree, 12-15 ft (3.5-4.5 m) tall and nearly double in width.  Foliage maroon-red in spring and darkening to purplish red, but may be greenish in late summer and  may become scarlet in fall.  The upper surface of leaves often with a pink margin, underside is green.  Inflorescences are purplish red.
  • Hardy to USDA Zone 5 or even 4 if in a protected locations (Snyder, 2000).  The purple selections are reportedly less hardy than the green ones.
