- Columnar, narrow tree, short, upright branches, short needles, about 2.5 cm long, not 2-ranked but more whorled.
- Sun or partial shade. Reportedly may grow 3 ft (0.9 m) per year.
- Hardy to USDA Zone 5 Discovered in 1897 by John A. Johnson on the lower Columbia River near Rainier, Oregon. He traded specimens with neighbors but the tree was not named and described until 1942 (Jacobson, 1996).
